I would like to thank those in attendance at today’s Kiwanis meeting. We were excited to have two gentlemen from the new Walmart in Heartland Crossing to update us on their future plans and their ability to help our community fundraising efforts.
We were missing quite a few people from our roster today. As a club, we have been blessed to have wonderful speakers to educate us on our community and new programs in and around our area. I would love to be able to show our presenters that Kiwanis is the strongest club in the area, but we can’t do it without your support. The Mooresville Kiwanis Club is 52 members strong and will be celebrating it’s 34th year as a club in June. Please help us offer our speakers the opportunity to present to a wide group of people by making it your goal to attend at least 3 meetings a month. If you have not been in a while and have questions, concerns or issues, please feel free to email me so that we can be certain that the Mooresville Kiwanis Club is helping to deliver the opportunities that brought you to the club originally.
Over the next several months we have many opportunities. I am pleased to announce that I will be serving as Lt. Governor for Circle City Division. I would love to be able to promote my home club as one of the best in the area, if not the state. We definitely have the personality and talent to be an even greater provider to our area. In this transition, we are looking for someone who would like to step up and lead the club as President. In addition, we are also looking for a Vice-President/President Elect for 2009-2010. I would be happy to discuss more information about either of these roles with you. I would like to thank BJ Pendleton for agreeing to serve as Secretary and Jeff Pipkin for continuing his role as Treasurer during the 2008-2009 year.
Our service clubs have really taken off over the last year. Donna Stutler has really worked hard to keep our Aktion Club involved in activities. Dennis Ward and Lindy Scott have worked diligently to rejuvenate the Key Club at the High School level. Our newest addition to the Kiwanis family is the North Madison K-Kids club, this club has worked hard to fundraise and complete various projects in our community. For more information on this club, please contact Meredith Bowling or Tiffani Bailey. Bri Spaulding, the 2007-2008 President is now looking ahead to Junior High and beginning a Builders Club at that level. Kelly Overton has volunteered to assist Bri with this project.
June 3rd will be our board meeting at 11:15, then our meeting among us will begin immediately following. We are incredibly blessed to have Jared Overton visiting that day. Please come out and show your support for one of our local servicemen home from Iraq.
On June 6th and 7th, the Kiwanis Club will host a camp site at the Morgan County Relay for Life. This is a great opportunity to get out and show your support while raising money for a very good cause. All of our lives have been touched by cancer in one way or another- this is a great way to honor those whose lives have been lost, those who are currently fighting the battle and those who have conquered cancer. It’s also a fun way to support your fellow Kiwanians as they travel around the track. This year’s theme is “FORREST GUMP”. Please contact Melissa Taylor if you are interested in giving some time for this event, it can be as little as an hour or you can come spend the night.
June 18th is the 21st annual Curry Overton Golf Classic. This is a great tradition that was started to fund the Mooresville Kiwanis Scholarship Fund. Each year a scholarship is given out to a Mooresville High School student to help with their college expenses. It takes a lot of people to make this outing a success and we need your help. This outing is by far the best deal around. Please contact Donna Stutler or John Ehrhart if you are interested in volunteering your time on the day of the event, assisting with the securing of sponsors or golfers or donating a door prize.
July 10th the Mooresville Kiwanis Club will be traveling to Camp Atterbury for a full day tour. This is an opportunity to understand and support those who defend our freedoms. For more information on this event, please contact Melissa Taylor.
In August, Kiwanis members and their immediate families have been invited to tour LUCAS OIL STADIUM. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore behind the scenes the home of the 2012 SuperBowl.
October 9th, the club will host it’s 4th Annual Taste of Mooresville. This has been an excellent fundraiser for us. However it takes A LOT of support from our membership. Last year over 20 restaurants participated, over 120 items were auctioned off and more than 30 businesses sponsored this event. We really need your help to pull this off. Please contact me for more information on how to get involved in this event.
Over the next several months, we will also be looking at community service projects to get involved with. Kiwanis is a strong proponent of “Prevent Child Abuse” and “Read Across America”. These are only a couple of possibilities and we are certainly looking for ideas or suggestions on how our club can better serve the needs of our area.
I’m looking forward to a great year of growth, not necessarily in membership, but in attendance and volunteerism. The Mooresville Kiwanis Club has an amazing history and it takes past members, current members and future members to continue the tradition of success. Please mark your calendars for Tuesdays at 12:00 at Ponderosa. I hope to see you there!
